April Newsletter – Greetings from the Featherston Community Centre

The Featherston Community Centre offers facilities to public and private users who require a meeting place for ongoing or one-off events, activities or classes. Our goal is to serve as the hub of Featherston’s social, educational, and recreational services – used, valued and supported by the entire community.

Ongoing Classes/Groups: Creative Memories, Feldenkrais, Mah Jong, Needlework & Crafts, Quilting, Tai Chi, Tuesday Drop-In Art Sessions

 Ongoing Services: Relationship Services, WINZ, CCS Disability Action, Wairarapa Community Law Centre, Narcotics Anonymous.

What’s new?

New mum, Heather is back and working hard but not full time at this point. Drop in and catch up.

 A new roof at last! We are very excited about the Centre’s new roof and looking forward to our first dry winter in years!  A Huge THANK YOU to all the people and organisations who helped pay for the desperately needed roof.

Tuesday Art: Drop in Art sessions are still on Tuesdays from 10am-2pm but are not run by King Street. The art classes are open to all ages and abilities, gold coin donation. This term’s theme is trees! The latest project is a 4 week series on sponge painting. All materials supplied.

 What’s happening on Thursday’s this Month?

Did You Know… Te Hauora Runanga O Wairarapa have brought Keiko in to run a second Tai Chi Class, Thursday mornings from 11.30-12.30 during the School term. Gold coin donation per session

Understanding Epilepsy : The Epilepsy Association of New Zealand invites you to attend a free seminar on Thursday, May 10 2012 from 12:30. The seminar will cover: what is epilepsy, causes, recognition of seizure types & triggers, first aid for seizures, recording seizures, principles of anti-epileptic medication, lifestyle issues and more. Tea & Coffee provided. To RSVP ring 0800 20 21 22.

Feldenkrais : Rupert Watson’s highly-regarded movement classes have started up again for the year. Thursday at 6.30pm and Saturday at 9.30am sees the Community Centre become a human movement laboratory. Easier than yoga and more fun than Pilates, Rupert’s classes produce nicely postured, refreshed, lengthened, highly functioning people by the score. Come along to see what you are missing. First class free. Down the track he’ll be running some short (2 hour) workshops to give people a taste, with themes of “a healthy back” and “the breath of life” to kick off with. Southern Exposure: Tune in to 92.7 Arrow FM at noon on April  26th to hear the next edition of the Community Centre’s Southern Exposure programme. You can also listen via the internet by going to http://www.arrowfm.co.nz

…just in case you missed it in our last newsletter: the grand finale to this year’s speakers’ corner series has been postponed to Tuesday 13 December (7.30pm). Join us then to hear what renowned NZ artist Robin White has to share!

Running a wee bit late this month – it’s still busy times, all round! Only another 5 weeks or so for the school term and then another couple of weeks until Xmas – this year is flying!

Don’t forget to pop into the community centre tomorrow night 7.30pm for our ‘Speaker’s Corner’ – this month with Raymond Mathews, sharing all about Waiorongomai – and how his family has lasted seven generations on this land.

We were to be hosting Dr Stuart Henrys this Thursday 6th of October Speakers Corner
The Coast to Coast Seismic Mapping Project – Dr Stuart HenrysWhy was Featherston shaken up on 12 May 2011? Dr Henrys (GNS Science) talks about the large multinational seismic experiment conducted between Kapiti and the Wairarapa to understand the potential for large earthquakes. What are the implications for the Wairarapa region? What comparisons can be made globally?  HOWEVER due to an unforeseen work commitment Dr Henrys has had to postpone until Thursday 20th October (Same time and place)

Sunday produce swap on Saturday you may ask ?? 

This month The Community Centre is very proud to host the Wairarapa Green dollar exchange’s monthly meet. Gates will be open from 8.30, Trading in kiwi or Green dollars, or bartering from 9.30am

It is open to everyone – produce, baking, art, firewood… Limited only by your imagination. (Gold coin/green dollar donation per vendor please) 

Clean up Featherston Day :: this Saturday 9.30am

Meet at the community centre on 14 Wakefield Street, 9.30am this Saturday to lend a hand with keeping New Zealand beautiful!
